Vice President John Dramani MahamaThe Vice President, John Dramani Mahama says Africa needs a new breed of leaders who would appreciate and understand the dictates of global politics and international diplomacy to deal effectively with wars, hunger, poverty and diseases among its people.

Speaking at the maiden African Servants Leadership Awards organized by the Graduate School of Governance and Leadership in Accra on Tuesday June 28, John Mahama challenged Tertiary Institutions in the country to introduce Leadership Training Courses to help produce the types of leaders required in Africa.

According to the Vice President, although leaders are said to be born, he believes they deserve training to make them become what their followers will want from them.

“Africa needs a new breed of leaders who would appreciate and understand the dictates of global politics and international diplomacy to deal effectively with wars, hunger, poverty and diseases. Where ever we find ourselves as leaders in this country our first commitment is to make life worth living for our kith and kin. You do not need to be a political maniac to achieve this, however collective support is crucial in making this happen.

“Globalization has made the world a small place and what happens in Ghana today reverberates elsewhere on the globe in different dimensions. There is therefore the need for us to forge global leadership networks in order to address the challenges facing Africa. As leaders we should learn to accept new ideas coming from other cultures by adopting them to suit our prevailing local conditions”.

The Vice President also called on the youth in leadership positions to inspire patriotism in their younger ones and help them take up the challenge.

The overall winner of the African Servant Leadership Award went to the leader of Action Congress of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Other winners at the Awards night include founder of Word Miracle Church International, Bishop Charles Agyin-Asare, Group Leader of the Law Trust Company, Nana Oye Lithur and Citi Fm 97.3 FM.
