Pretoria — The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) will present more than 35 awards to top achievers and schools in this year’s National Science Olympiad at an awards ceremony on Thursday.

Over 24 000 learners from South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Namibia participated in the Olympiad this year.

The competition comprises an examination in either physical or life science and learners stand the chance to win prizes such as laptops, iPods and more.

The top performing schools will receive science equipment for their laboratories.

The four top achievers for 2011 will be taken on an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the London International Youth Science Forum from 27 July to 10 August this year.

Past winners have commented that this is the opportunity of a lifetime and in many cases, it inspired them to follow careers in science, engineering or technology.

The National Science Olympiad, now in its 47th year, aims to contribute towards excellence in science among learners and to encourage them to take up careers in science, engineering and technology.

The competition is open to learners in Grades 10 to 12.
