AWKA—SOME women groups in Anambra State have called on the state governor, Mr. Peter Obi, to sign into law  the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill that would guarantee 35% affirmative action for women in the state. The bill was passed by the immediate past State House of Assembly last year, but the governor is yet to sign it into law

The rate at which marriages are breaking up due to pressure from in-laws has reached an unbearable point that the Word Miracle Church International has prohibited new couples from living in family houses.

The presiding Bishop of the church, Bishop Charles Agyin Asare described the situation where young men marry their wives and live with them in their family homes as against the principles of the Bible.

Quoting Genesis to buttress his point, Bishop Agyin Asare said the Bible states explicitly that “A man will leave his mother and father and cling to his wife and become flesh”.

He argued that the pressure from the in-laws and siblings can break very successful marriages resulting in the decision of the church not to bless any marriage where the couple intends to live in their family house.

The Bishop said the church encourages young men to live on their own and learn to manage their own lives before marrying.

According to him, “when these spouses, especially women live in the family homes, family members tend to see the wife as an intruder and a servant creating more agitation in the home and eventually breaking the bond.”

Marriage Counselor at the Shattered Lives Rebuilding Ministries (SHAREM), Rev Mrs. Boadi Darkwah, also spoke against couples living in family houses saying several marriages have suffered due to this.

Meanwhile a woman in Twifo Praso who shared her experience on condition of anonymity to Adom News stated that, it was a horrible treatment she would not wish for any of her siblings or children.
