Federal government has increased scholarship allowances for students to N180, 000 for postgraduate courses, N150, 000 for undergraduate courses and N100, 000 for Colleges of Education and polytechnics.
Speaking at the 23rd Annual Coordinating Committee Meeting (CCM) of secretaries of federal and states scholarship boards in Abuja yesterday, the Permanent Secretary of the federal ministry of education Prof Nicholas Damachi said 1,139 students were awarded scholarships to undertake courses at national and international levels in 2010.
Prof Damachi said the forum would serve as an avenue for stakeholders to brainstorm on government policies pertaining to scholarship awards in Nigeria education.
Director Federal Scholarship Board Hindatu Abdullahi noted that the administration of scholarship awards is challenging during periods of economic difficulties and called on participants to articulate a virile scholarship policy to address the problem.
Hindatu urged all state scholarship boards to increase publicity so that potential beneficiaries become awardees of available scholarships.
In a goodwill message, the Director FCT Scholarship Board Jimiko Habakkuk said 10,084 students were awarded scholarships in 2010.
