The Progressive Action Congress (PAC) yesterday in Lagos, urged the 7th National Assembly to repeal all “obnoxious laws” enacted by the 6th Assembly, especially those affecting elections.
National Chairman of PAC, Chief Charles Nwodo, said that some of the laws enacted by the 6th Assembly would not enhance democratic development.
“Any law that contravenes the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is null and void. The 7th National Assembly must look into these obnoxious laws and repeal lots of things passed without recourse to their implications on democracy,’’ he said.
Nwodo said the aspect of the electoral law which allowed INEC to deregister weak political parties that failed to win seats in the National and state assemblies contravened the freedom of association of citizens.
According to him, it is risky for INEC to use that aspect of the law which the commission knows is wrong.
“INEC knows full well that some political parties are in court over the deregistration clause,’’ he said.
The PAC chairman also called on the 7th National Assembly to review the aspect which deals with independent candidature.
INEC last week said it might not deregister weak political parties which failed to win a seat during the National and State Assembly elections. (NAN)
