Freetown — The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has expressed grave concern over the way and manner in which finances of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) were being handled, thus urging for an immediate independent audit assessment to be carried out on the state broadcaster.

The party’s spokesperson, Chernor Alpha M. Bah said they were very much eager to know the current status of the institution’s finances and how much money they were receiving from the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund.

“We want an independent body to carry out an audit assessment into the finances of the SLBC because all is not well there. There are rumours going around regarding the alleged non-payment of staff,” he said, adding that if it turned out to be true that members of staff were not being paid, the management and board of the institution should be dissolved with immediate effect.

“Our brothers and sisters working there must be paid,” he insisted

Bah also questioned the recruitment of senior and middle level staff into the institution, saying “it is not done properly”, while calling on the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate the procurement procedure in securing the institution’s satellite.

“We strongly question the way and manner in which recruitment is being done in the senior and middle level management at the SLBC. We also call on the ACC to investigate the procurement procedure in securing the satellite,” he urged.

Meanwhile, commenting on the current strike action of lecturers at FBC, the NDA spokesman pointed out that all government workers deserve better conditions of service.

He therefore urged the government to respect the demands of the Academic Staff Association (ASA) of FBC for an increment in salary for lecturers and find ways of settling the stand-off amicably.

However, when contact for his reaction, Director-General of the SLBC Elvis Gbanabom Hallowell said “I have no comment to make”.
