District sports officers in the country have been asked to identify coaches who can handle youth development centres on permanent basis. The assistant commissioner for sports, Jack Indakwa, said the sports department established youth development centers in all the districts to explore and nurture talents among the youth.

The assistant commissioner asked the sports officers to identify coaches with integrity and who can motivate youth to enhance their sporting talents. He said each district is supposed to have at least three centres for various sports to accommodate talented youth. “Everybody is not good in class work. That is why the department established development centres to help talented youth enhance their careers,” said Indakwa.

He said the sports department was prompted to set up the centres to tap talents after realising that various sports associations in the country could not develop sports. Indakwa said each centre will get Sh750,000 annually for development and the department hopes to increase the allocation to Sh2 million to expand the number of disciplines.
