Bebe (Besiktas, loan), Ritchie de Laet (Norwich, loan), Joe Dudgeon (Hull), Paul Scholes (retired), Edwin van der Sar (retired)

Dimitar Berbatov, Wes Brown, Mame Biram Diouf, Jonny Evans, Darron Gibson, Tomasz Kuszczak, Nani, John O’Shea

We have certain targets in mind, two or three will be fulfilled. Where we are good is bringing in young players, the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney and Hernandez.

Sir Alex Ferguson

Manchester United are a great club and being associated with them is a great compliment for me. I liked watching Schmeichel and also Van der Sar – both are among the best I have seen.

David de Gea

It will be a busier than usual summer this year. I will be going away at some point in June and be back for the start of our tour, but I will be on with player stuff for the next few weeks, I am sure.

Goal.com’s Verdict

David Gill said United would look to get their business done early and the Premier League champions have flown out of the traps by committing £36.6m on Phil Jones and Ashley Young.

After years of frugal spending under the Glazer ownership, the purse strings have been loosened for Sir Alex Ferguson to build a squad that can challenge Barcelona as the best team in Europe.

Young and Jones will certainly strengthen the United squad but the next signing will be their most important to date, with David De Gea set to be confirmed as the club’s new No.1 to replace Edwin Van der Sar.

That leaves just one more piece of business to do in the remaining two months of the window – a central midfielder to replace Paul Scholes – and it will prove the most difficult and the most expensive.

United made an enquiry for Tottenham’s Luka Modric in May but accept it is extremely unlikely they will sign the Croatian so are instead focussing their attention on a £30m-plus swoop for Inter playmaker Wesley Sneijder.

Given United’s weakness in central midfield, the club’s fans will not view the transfer window as a success until a top quality player is signed to fill the position.

Readers’ Verdict

I’d like to see Man United buy a creative midfielder, we need to replace Scholes – Akinbolajo OlumideMaybe Sneijder is the priority, but we need a good goalkeeper first – Lars RegenThiago Alcantara is not a bad deal if he doesn’t go down the Fabregas way after a few years. Top priority should be Modric or Sneijder – Joshua Andrews
