Swansea are set to miss out on securing the services of Marcos Senna after the experience midfielder revealed he is edging ever closer to signing a new contract with his current club, Villarreal.

Senna’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the month and while there is as yet no agreement on a new contract, the two parties are close to a solution.

“Last Friday, after the gala dinner before the Formula 1 race, I had a relaxed conversation with the chairman and the coach,” he was quoted as saying by EFE.

“The will of both parties is to continue together and there are only very small differences separating us at this moment.”

The Brazilian-born midfielder, who was speaking at the launch of a football tournament designed to raise proceeds for his own personal foundation, wants to stay with Villarreal and believes that he will sign a new deal in the not too distant future.

“Following the informal meeting, the president’s son told me he would contact my agent on Monday. I am optimistic that we will soon reach an agreement.”

“I have been here a long time. I want to stay at Villarreal for many years…well at least for one year.”
