Aston Villa are reportedly interested in a shock £14 million bid for former midfielder James Milner, according to The Daily Mirror.

The 25-year-old England international was a regular at Villa Park after joining the club initially on loan in 2005 and making the deal permanent in 2008 after returning to Newcastle United.

However, Milner is now apparently concerned that he may slip down the pecking order at Manchester City, only a year after being sold to the Eastlands club for a club record £23 million transfer fee.

Villa manager Alex McLeish said:  “Darren Bent has been in sensational form scoring goals for this club since he signed in January, but he needs a supplier and the ammunition to carry that on.”

McLeish is also reportedly interested in Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross, as he appears to have some doubts about the longevity of current central defensive partnership Richard Dunne and James Collins.
