Congo have advanced to the knockout stages of the 2011 FIFA Under-17 World Cup with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against North Korea.

The result means the Congolese finish second in the pool behind leader Mexico and they will now play either Uruguay or England in the knockout stages.

Christ Nkounkou got the Congolese goal as he equalised after Ju Jong Chol had given the Koreans a 14 minute lead.

Nkounkou was a threat throughout, forcing the Asian goalkeeper into a fine save inside the first minute.

But Jong Chol gave his side the lead as he beat the offside trap and chipped the keeper, part of a spell of dominance from the Koreans, who might have extended their lead further.

Justalain Kounkou went just wide for Congo after the break, while Mavis Tchibota missed his kick completely when well-placed.

But the African side got the goal they needed when Hardy Binguila crossed and Nkounkou overpowered his marker Chol Ryong to guide his header into the net.
