The ministers of tourism in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region have joined Zambians in mourning the second president of the Republic of Zambia Frederick Chiluba, who died on Saturday in Lusaka.
The ministers, who were in Livingstone for a regional meeting, said they were saddened by the untimely death of Dr Chiluba.
In a statement released in Livingstone yesterday, the ministers described Dr Chiluba as an illustrious son of Zambia, SADC and Africa as a whole.
Chairperson of the SADC Committee of Ministers Responsible for Tourism, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitah said her fellow ministers in the region expressed their heartfelt condolences to the Government and the people of Zambia on the death of the second president of Zambia.
Zimbabwean Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Walter Mzembi said he was sad that Dr Chiluba had died.
Meanwhile, the United Church of Zambia (UCZ) has sent a message of condolences to President Rupiah Banda and the Government on the death of Dr Chiluba.
UCZ general secretary Peggy Mulambya-Kabonde said the Church acknowledged the second president’s contributions to Zambia.
“In the nature of things, God has taken him on as recorded in Joshua 14:1-2. We are urging Zambians to look up to God who is our source of strength and encouragement in times such as this,” Reverend Kabonde said.
She appealed to the ruling party and opposition political parties to put aside their political opinions and give Dr Chiluba a dignified send-off that he deserved.
The Zambia Mission Centre Board in cooperation with the People’s Bible College and Community Education Ministries of Chief Mpanshya in Chongwe also sent their condolences to the Government and citizens for the loss of the former head of State.
Board of governors chairperson, Ebston Katongo said Dr Chiluba would be remembered for the good things he did such as the declaration of Zambia as a Christian Nation.
