Former Aston Villa winger Tony Morley believes that Marc Albrighton can fill the void left by Ashley Young, who left to join Manchester United.
The 25-year-old spent four years at Villa Park before accepting a mega-money deal to make a move to the Old Trafford outfit.
The former Watford man had only a year left on his contract with the club, and Morley is of the opinion that selling the midfielder was the right move.
“I personally think it’s a great move for Villa,” he told talkSPORT.
“Whatever the fans say they are going to get £16 million to £20m for him and the chairman Mr Randy Lerner has probably had to pay that out this month in compensation for certain managers.
“To be brutally honest the writing was on the wall six months ago. They offered Ashley Young the biggest contract in Villa’s history and he turned it down. We’re not talking about a couple of hundred quid here, we’re talking about tens of thousands of pounds, and he turned it down. I thought then he had made his mind up.
“It’s no good keeping a player who is unhappy, he’s just not going to perform. And if young Marc Albrighton improves in the next season or so he could well fill Ashley Young’s boots out wide.”
