City Council Does Not Have Qualified Engineers to Bring Down Buildings

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Geneva) 24 June 2011 press release Ninety-three asylum seekers were deported to Tanzania in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The group, comprising 59 Somalis and 34 Ethiopians, had recently arrived by boat near Mocimboa da Praia in northern Mozambique. Most were young men but among them was a woman, four children, and three elderly men.

City hall does not have the capacity to inspect and approve buildings according to the Institute of Engineers.

Kariuki Muchemi from the institute says City hall has only one qualified engineer to approve building plans making it easy for quacks to operate.

He says some investors are also altering plans because they know the City Council does not have the capacity to inspect buildings. He says demolition of buildings should be the last resort.
