18 June 2011 Civil servants' representatives yesterday argued that Government has capacity to increase their salaries following reports that it bought 130 top-of-the-range vehicles for Cabinet Ministers, their deputies and other senior officials for about US$10 million. This comes at a time when Finance Minister Tendai Biti insists Government is broke and cannot afford to award civil servants a salary increase. The Herald is reliably informed Minister Biti and his colleagues in Government, recently approved the purchase of 40, 2110 Limited Edition Jeep Grand Cherokees for Cabinet ministers, 40 Land Cruisers V8 SUVs for deputy ministers and 50 Prados for Permanent Secretaries

Dar es Salaam — As the start of the Utrack Saba Saba Rally draws closer, Arusha Motor Sports Club has finalised drawing up new routes for the event planned to get underway on July 9.Chief clerk of the course Viren Shah confirmed to The Citizen yesterday that the two-day 350km race billed to be competitive would start and end at Olyset Net Factory at Kisongo, Arusha.

“We hope that the race will attract a huge number of competitors and onlookers because the drivers will be plying smooth roads,” said the clerk.The Utrack Saba Saba Rally serves as the fourth round of the National Rally Championship and will start with the Super Special Stage.

“It’s our hope that Kimono and Messianic will be among the most exciting and challenging sections of the 350km race,” he observed.Shah disclosed that the two sections are smooth, but the drivers will have to use extra intelligence to manoeuvre the challenging bends.

The race is named Utrack for sponsorship reasons. It is co-hosted by Retina, Atom Z Textile Mills, Olivet Net, Golden Rose Hotel, Sunvic Express, La Fiesta Bar 7 Restaurant, Media Works, Design Solutions and Radio 5.

Shah said as of yesterday host Arusha had submitted 10 entries who include: Amarjit Dillon, Ajanta Shah, Navajo Hans and Satrap Hans.Others are: Reship Lodhia, Stephen Lohay, Erick Cormack, Robert Sander, Sukhvinder Sian, Sameer Mehboob and Nishit Bhatt.

Larry Horn, who was the third round winner in Tanga last month, has yet to confirm his participation.But Tanga Motor Sports Club chairman, Hussein Moor hopes that his club would field three drivers in the event. Veteran driver Saidi Baghoza and his teammates Twalib Hatibu and Jamal Nirmal are likely to represent Tanga, according to Moor.
