A CROWD of aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members yesterday took over the premises of the Ondo State office of the PDP and sacked the workers and members of the State Working Committee (SWC) in what many observers saw as a fallout of the crisis over the controversial list of ministerial nominees drawn by the party leadership. Also in Edo State, PDP leaders in Akoko Edo Local Council condemned the exclusion of their members from the ministerial list sent to the President. It took the intervention of a combined team of regular and armed anti-riot policemen to disperse the  Ondo demonstrators who  arrived at the premises located on Oyemekun Road at 8a.m with sticks and cudgels singing anti-leadership songs Movable property in the twin two-storey building were damaged while two of the workers,  identified as Dele Oluyole, the Office Accountant and one Tunde Tokunbo, were  assaulted by the mob who however allowed the party publicity secretary, Adeyemi Adedipe, to leave the place unmolested

Nairobi — Kenya’s top most public hospital has a new chief executive.

Mr Richard Leserian Lesiyampe, currently the Deputy Director Finance and Administration at Kenya Wildlife Service starts his three-year tenure Thursday as chief executive officer of Kenyatta National Hospital.

He was appointed by Medical Services minister Anyang’ Nyong’o following a successful interview by the the Kenyatta National Hospital Board.

“Twenty one (21) people applied for the post. Four were shortlisted for the interviews of which Lesiyampe emerged the best,” said a statement from the Ministry of Medical Services Thursday.

Mr Lesiyampe, a management specialist, holds an MBA in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi and is currently pursuing a PHD at Kenya Methodist University, said the statement.

He replaces the acting CEO, Dr Charles Kabetu in office since December 2010 following the expiry of Dr Jotham Michemi’s contract.

Kenyatta National Hospital is Kenya’s biggest referral hospital.

The new CEO will now take care of the facility which on average caters for over 80,000 in-patients and over 500,000 out-patients annually.

With 50 wards, the hospital at any given day hosts between 2,500 and 3,000 patients.

It also has 22 out-patient clinics, 24 theatres out of which 16 are specialised and Accident & Emergency Department as well as a Doctors Plaza consisting of 60 suites for various consultant specialities.

The appointment comes as the controversy surrounding the appointment of the director of the Moi Teaching and Referral hospital continues to rage.

Last week, Prof Nyong’o said there were no plans to reinstate Prof Haroun Mengich as director of the hospital.

The minister said interviews had already been done by the hospital’s board and candidates shortlisted and was only waiting for the names to be forwarded to him for appointment.

Prof Nyong’o said demonstrations by some residents of Eldoret seeking to have Prof Mengich reinstated were democratic.

Some of the demonstrators in Eldoret had said that Prime Minister Raila Odinga while in Nandi had said that Prof Mengich would be reinstated.

The minister had appointed Dr Omar Aly as acting director and deputy director of administration and finance Agunda Ochanda as his deputy.
