DESPITE RIDING on promises of acquiring a permanent well-equipped regional secretariat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Northern region to get elected, successive regional chairmen in the area have yet to fulfill that promise.

Current NPP Regional Chairman, Alhaji Haruna Sulemana Tia is among the list of persons who promised making the Northern region one of the party’s treasuries in the 2012 general elections with the provision of a permanent party office.

But barely two and a half years after he assumed office, the NPP regional secretariat is yet to be built and some executives are operating from their private homes and vehicles.

It is obvious that little or no effort is being made by the current crop of executives in securing the requisite party facilities in the Northern region to boost the NPP’s chances in Election 2012.

It is alleged that the party’s recurring defeat in the region is as a result of logistical constraints while party executives allegedly look on unconcerned.

It is appalling to note that a 12 x 12 store room used for the sale of bicycles, has been converted into a regional secretariat without any logistics to keep records or data related to party activities and administration.

The store room, according to sources close to the party, also serves as a parking place for some bicycle vendors who display them for sale during the daytime and repack them into the room after close of work.

This is raising questions over the commitment of executives in finding a permanent building for the party in the region.

The acquisition of the regional secretariat has been a major concern to most party followers for sometime now after some constituencies including Salaga put up permanent modern structures.

Sources confided in DAILY GUIDE that the late NPP Regional Chairman, Alhaji Salifu COP made plans to build an office complex for the party but met his untimely death.

Since then, there has not been any effort by successive regional executives to continue with his dream.

Meanwhile, Hackman Owusu Agyeman, a staunch NPP member is on record to have donated a magnificent mansion to the NPP in his home region to be used as party offices with computers and TV sets.

The National Democratic Congress has its own regional secretariat complex and standardized offices for the party’s constituencies.

Even smaller political parties like the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) has a very nice regional secretariat, as well as the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and the People’s National Convention (PNC), suggesting their readiness for the elections.

When contacted, Regional Secretary, Dr. Clifford Braimah disclosed to DAILY GUIDE they were in litigation over documentation of a piece of land acquired to put up the building at Lamashegu, a suburb of the Tamale.

According to him, until the legal tussle is over, they will operate from the current makeshift office close to the Aboabo market.

He told the paper that party documents and other vital information were stored in that office.
