Angela Kalule is having a good year; she has two singles rocking the airwaves like no other musician in the country.
The Katikitiki album has another thriller, the Mulaalo Wange.
“Mulaalo Wange was brought out after Katikitiki to give the audience a little bit more of what to expect on the album and give them something to look forward to at the concert rather than have the usual ‘one song’ concert,” she said.
The album has six songs; Katikitiki, Kasagalira, Topapa Kugenda, Mulaalo Wange, Yye Ggwe and Wansiiga Love. She says the years of sitting back and leaving the field to other musicians are gone; she is now out to prove that she is a force to reckon with.
“It is basically the fact that my fans yearn to hear more of Angela singing. This is accompanied by the fact that I felt a need to leave a legacy. It is not good just dying away and being remembered as an artiste who had the ability to make an impact but didn’t,” she said.
Angela, who will be launching her album at New Club Obbligato on Friday, says she is happy to act as a love doctor though she does not have all the answers to relationships; rather, she’s simply a channel through which the messages are conveyed.
Currently, she is a guest artiste of the Afrigo Band and a darling at functions such as weddings and introductions. She is working hard to see that she equals her idols like the late Carol Nakimera, Maurice Kirya and Julie Muteesasira locally, and internationally, she fancies Gladys Knight, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Angie Stone and Musiq Soulchild.
Weird Angela
The weirdest thing Angela does is peeping under her bed before she goes to sleep.
“Since childhood I somehow feel I have to make sure no monster is under my bed. I also take the bathroom as a place of peace and when I get very angry at someone and just do not want to talk to them, I step into the shower and turn on the water and pour my heart out. By the time I get out, I will have calmed down enough to talk to them. If I am not home, I just get into the car and talk to it,” she says.
Groovy Angela
Angela’s best song locally is Joselina by Jose Chameleone and Papa Ciddy and Where You Are by Blu 3.
“The simplicity of those two songs expressing love just beats me,” she confesses.
She has no crush on anybody right now, because, “a crush is this burning desire to be with someone you find attractive but for me that desire is fully met because I am with him.”
She hopes to return to radio after her degree at Cavendish University because she misses her listeners. She chose Obbligato for her launch because her fans complained of high prices of beer and food at Golf Course Hotel where she hosted her 2009 launch.
“This launch will be a concert entailing a number of genres of music since we expect a number of people that have different tastes in music. A song like Katikitiki cuts across all audiences and I feel I should provide them something special,” she said.
She will be accompanied by Annet Nandujja, Afrigo Band, Aziz Azion, Mariam Ndagire, Kika Troupe, Maureen Nantume, Kato Lubwama and Jose Chameleone, among others.
The Obbligato show will go for Shs 20,000 ordinary and Shs 50,000 VIP. Satellite Beach, Mukono show on Saturday will cost Shs 5,000 and on Sunday she will be at Sunset Pub, Nateete, for Shs 10,000.
Older Angela
“Other factors constant, five years from now, Angela will be self-employed within K’angie Holdings (U) Ltd, [K’angie Holdings has K’angie Restaurant on Kampala Road, K’angie Secretarial Bureau and an Internet Café] still doing music and real big in Africa,” Angela says.
“And I can’t rule out the marriage part because the person of my choice is available, already waiting for the day.”
