The Minister for Employment and Social Welfare, Hon Enoch Teye Mensah, says he is not aware the Mills administration created as much as 1.6 million jobs in the first twelve months of the government. The issue of the “1.6 million jobs is history”, the Ningo Prampram MP said in a calm voice, in an attempt to break a storm of probing questions flying in from the Minority in Parliament. The figure was originally given by Deputy Information Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in a screaming frontpage publication in the Daily Graphic in March 2010
Dr Benjamin Kumbuor, the Minister for the Interior, on Wednesday said allegation that Ghana had been inundated with an influx of refugees and ex-combatants from the Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been exaggerated.
He said this was as a result of misinformation by some self-styled executive members of the Niger Delta Residents Association all in a bid to attract attention.
Dr Kumbuor said this when he appeared before the Parliament to answer questions. He said statistics indicate that there are thriving Nigerian communities living in Ghana but most of them are traders and only a small fraction of them are Nigerians from the Niger Delta Region.
Dr Kumbuor said the Intelligence Unit of the Ghana Immigration Service had conducted investigations into the alleged influx of refugees and ex-combatants of the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria into the country following media publications.
