Windhoek — This weekend’s eagerly awaited Rehoboth derby between traditional foes Rehoboth Rugby Club and MTC Premiership runaway leaders Reho Falcon is a matter of life and death.
Thousands of rugby enthusiasts are expected to flock into the Rehoboth Sports Stadium when the two giants clash in the second round of the MTC NRU Premier League on Saturday.
There is very little love lost between the two neighbours and with Falcon riding the crest of the wave, which has culminated in a seven-match unbeaten streak and having beaten Rehoboth hands down in their first round encounter earlier this year – a titanic battle is surely in the offing.
The MTC Premier League early pace-setters are at full strength and welcome back the Bock brothers Jacky and Heini from national duty, while outside centre Attie du Plessis is back in contention for selection after he was sidelined by a shoulder injury.
Falcon will be without the services of enterprising winger Russell van Wyk, who has been snapped up by the Cheetahs Under-21 side in South Africa.
Going into the match with their tails up following their resounding 42-29 win over Rehoboth in the opening round first round – the mood in the Falcon’s camp is described as phenomenal and the players are out to prove that their top position in the league is no fluke, and have promised to inflict more misery on their neighbours.
Falcon have been boosted by the official announcement of a massive kit sponsorship by giant local paint manufactures Neo Paint, which has committed itself to bankroll the team for the current term with playing gear plus a N$2000,000 bonus for every win recorded by Falcon in the league.
Although the official announcement was made in Windhoek yesterday during a brief handover ceremony – the sponsorship deal is retrospective for the 2011 campaign.
It’s Falcon’s first real sponsor during the club’s 17 years existence.
