Yenagoa—As part of efforts aimed at eradicating poverty in the coastal area of Bayelsa East senatorial district in Bayelsa State, the Barigha Nimi-Amange Foundation says it has so far empowered 1,000 families with micro-credit facilities.
Chairman of the foundation, Senator Barigha Nimi-Amange, who disclosed this in Nembe, said the gesture was to help create economically independent families.
Amange whose foundation in conjunction with the National Poverty Eradication Programme recently organised a two-day workshop to empower women cooperative societies in the coastal areas, noted that the people can become self-reliant only if women join self-help groups in large numbers.
According to him, the workshop was put together to educate the women on the principles of investing in micro credit, adding that some money would be paid into their various bank accounts to assist them in their businesses.
“This is to help create economically independent families and solve their problems and train their children,” he said, noting that the foundation empowerment programme was targeted at the women due to their economic advantage in reducing poverty.
