Danny Welbeck claims he was booed by his family for choosing England

English striker Danny Welbeck has revealed that he was booed by his own family for opting to play for the European country instead of Ghana.

The youth international, whose parents come from Ghana, was courted by the Black Stars.

But he was handed his first England senior call-up in March for the friendly against the Black Stars.

The decision to snub Ghana and play for England sparked fury among Black Stars fans even in his own family.

Welbeck recalled the pride, and the booing from his own Ghanaian relatives, when he got an England senior cap against Ghana last season.

He said: “It felt like a natural succession stepping up to the seniors because I’ve been playing for England since I was 14.

“Of course I got booed because I was eligible to play for Ghana too!

“I even had a few cousins in the stands and they said they were booing!

“It was fine, we all had a little laugh at the end of the game.

“I’ve still got aunties and uncles back in Ghana and they were all really happy for me having made my debut for England so it was all sweet.”

Welbeck helped Manchester United win the Carling Cup and rates it as his best moment so far.
