Suicide bombing: Nigerians should not panic, says Jonathan

Charles Kazooba 16 May 2011 Nairobi — Rwanda is seeking support from the East Africa Community partner states to crush a new rebel group based in the DR Congo. Kigali has started sharing intelligence information as it builds a case for a possible intervention against the new group, which threatens to scuttle peacebuilding in the volatile Great Lakes region. The Rwanda army leadership says intelligence chiefs from the East African Community partner states and the United Nations are still analysing data on the group, allegedly formed by two Rwandan dissidents, Col Patrick Karegeya and Gen Kayumba Nyamwasa, who fell out with President Paul Kagame a few years ago.

ABUJA – PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, Friday, visited the scene of  yesterday’s suicide  bomb attack at  the headquarters of the Nigerian Police Force and urged Nigerians not to panic over the emergence of suicide bombers  in the country, saying that very soon, the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, that  claimed responsibility for the attack will be history.

Fielding questions from State House Correspondents during on-the-spot assessment of the incident, President Jonathan maintained that though the emergence of suicide bombers  in Nigeria is disturbing, there is no cause for panic as the ugly trend would soon be nipped in the bud.

He assured that  bomb blasts occurrences in the country will soon be a thing of the past.
According to him, though it is a global occurrence, government will get to the roots of the matter as it concerns the nation

“We use this opportunity to assure Nigerians that it happens all over the world, no country is free. Nigeria is also having some ugly incidents lately, but surely, we will get over it and people should not panic at all, soon most of these things will be a thing of the past”, he declared.
While commiserating with all those that were affected in the dastardly act, the President said “some vehicles were burnt and some people must have been victims of the explosion. First and foremost, let me commiserate with those people who lost their lives and property”.

He stressed that the case should also not be viewed in isolation as even the safe American white house has been a target by terrorist in the past.

Asked if the Inspector-General of Police was the target, Jonathan said “no, it is not just the IG, everybody is a target of terrorist attacks. I don’t want to make reference to what happened in the United States that they were to crash a plane into the White House. So, terrorist will aim at the top if they can bomb the President, they will do it”.

President Jonathan who was received by the IGP, Hafiz Rigim and DIG, Evelyn Okonkwo, was accompanied on the visit by Ima Niboro,  Oronto Douglas and  other officials of the Protocol unit in Aso Rock.
