Birmingham City have vowed to pursue legal action against Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish.

The Scot resigned from his post at St Andrew’s last week via email, with the League Managers’ Association backing the boss, citing “serious issues” between McLeish and senior figures at Birmingham City.

McLeish was controversially appointed as the successor to Gerard Houllier on Friday morning, but Birmingham are looking for some sort of compensation from the former Rangers and Scotland manager.

The club released a statement on their official website revealing how they plan to deal with the situation.

“The fact that Alex McLeish has been appointed does not mean that the legal dispute is over and Birmingham City maintains its stance and will vigorously pursue the matter,” the statement read.

“We are very disappointed with how the club and its fans have been treated by Mr McLeish given the way we have supported him over the years and we are still looking into whether Aston Villa’s conduct has been in line with Premier League rules.”

Acting chairman Peter Pannu is still to appoint a new manager, but the club insist they will act on the vacancy in good time.

The statement continued: “The club will continue its full efforts on recruiting a new manager and hopes to make an appointment as soon as possible.”
