The Gambia National Olympic Committee as the ambassador of the Olympic Movement in The Gambia in collaboration with the management committee of Olymafrica Center, Serekunda East, will celebrate the Olympic Day on the 18th June 2011, according to a press release issued by the Gambia National Olympic Committee.

According to the release, the events which will start at 8:00am to 17:00 pm at the Serekunda East mini stadium will witness activities such as 3km road race for school children, Volleyball for Upper Basic Schools, Handball for the Lower Basic Schools, Kids Athletics and Wheelchair 1km road race for the Paralympics will be staged during the celebration.

“The Olympic Day Celebration has been a firm pillar for the Celebration of Olympic Day throughout the world and it is the biggest mass sports in the world organized to commemorate the founding of the modern Olympic Movement (IOC). Olympic Day is a great opportunity for the people around the world to experience the Olympic values and live the Olympic experience outside Games times. VIPs, teachers, parents and students of various schools will attend to give support to their athletes and teams; however at the end of the activities IOC Olympic Day Certificates will be given to all the participants,” the release noted.

During the celebration, the release disclosed, the IOC member, Ms. Beatrice Allen will read the IOC’s president’s message to the students and the general public.
