Geneva – The Federal Government has explained why Nigeria lost her position on the Governing Council of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Nigeria lost to Congo. in an election held on June 6 to elect those who will represent Africa on the Board of the UN body.
Mr Anthony Ozodinobi, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Labour and the leader of Nigeria delegation to the on-going 100th Session of the International Labour Conference gave the explanation on Tuesday in Geneva.
He said Nigeria lost the position when the country’s delegation decided to go against African Group decision that another country must take over the position.
“A term is three years and we have covered nine years. So we knew the situation was like that but we just felt too that we have been leading Africa and we felt we could lead more.
“Nigeria has spent nine years on the position, after leading the West African sub region for three consecutive terms, before we were asked to step down for another country.
“We wanted tenure extension because we thought we should continue to serve Africa and be appreciated for we have really played very strong role,” he added.
Also Nigeria’s delegation include, Dr Clement Ilo, Director of Productivity and Measurement, Federal Ministry of Labour, Mr Peter Ajuzie, Nigeria Attaché to the ILO in Geneva, Mrs. Ume-Eronnimi, Commissioner Labour, Federal Civil Service Commission.(NAN)
