Real Zaragoza striker,
Ikechukwu Uche has pledged to fire in the goals that will propel the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria are in danger of missing out on a Nations Cup ticket for the first time in a long time and need convincing victories over Madagascar and Guinea to salvage what is left of their qualification hopes. Guinea presently top the group with 10 points, three more than the Eagles, whose albatross in the qualification race is their inability to win on the road.
Since returning from a year-long injury layoffthis year, the 27 year-old former Recreativo and Getafe goal poacher, has been in a rich vein of form, scoring an amazing eight goals for Nigeria in Nations Cup qualifiers and friendlies
But despite his chart-bursting form, the Eagles are yet to shake Guinea off the top of the group, a situation that is causing Coach Samson Siasia to have sleepless nights but speaking with Sports Vanguard, on the sidelines of the Kanu Testimonial match held weekend at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, the former Racing Ferrol ace, while coming to terms with fans fears, said that his goals were going to start counting for the good of the national team.
“I know how Nigerians feel over our Nations Cup chances. They feel that we have not done enough and that we might not qualify but I am assuring them that we are going to make it as the winners of the group.
“My job is to score and with the support of my teammates, I pledge to score in our next matches, which hopefully would ensure our qualification for the tournament in 2012.
This event cannot pass us by.. I admit tat it is very difficult now but we shall be there. We have the believe and we shall give our best always to qualify”, said Uche, who started his professional career in Spain, having arrived the country before the age of 20.
