Oshakati — The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Namibia has donated boxing gear to the Oshakati-based Kilimanjaro Boxing Club.

Hans-Christian Mahnke, from the Cultural Desk said at the donation ceremony the embassy is delighted to make a contribution to boxing, especially in the north.

“From what we have been noticing over the years, most of the successful boxers hail from the northern part of the country and it is only proper to make a small contribution to Kilimanjaro,” Mahnke noted.

He said the equipment, valued at more than N$2 000, includes two boxing bags and a pair of boxing gloves. Kilimanjaro Boxing Club owner and former boxing national champion and Olympiad, Joseph Benhard, said he hoped other organizations in the country would emulate the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and also make donations to boxing.

He said although he was a professional boxing promoter, there was need to scout for talents in the amateur ranks, who could be groomed to join the paid ranks and that the donation would resuscitate the sport in the north.

Benhard added: “We are giving our time for free to help local youngsters get fit, focused, stay out of trouble and off the streets.”

“We’re hoping local businesses and the Oshakati community will donate cash or equipment to help the gym punch above its weight. We’d welcome donations of any boxing equipment as well as gym equipment.”
