Sunyani, June 13, GNA – ActionAid Ghana with support from ActionAid International, at the week-end donated relief items worth GH¢22,000 to Ivorian refugees at their camp at Berekum in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The items included; 200 pairs of children slippers, 1,000 pieces of underwear for women and children, 250 plastic water containers, 100 pieces of children clothing, 300 bars of soap, 200 pieces of tooth paste, 300 tooth brushes and 3,000 pieces of sanitary pads.

The food items were; 600 medium sized tins of tomatoes, 20 bags of rice, 10 bags of gari, 10 bags of sugar and 40 bags of beans.

Madam Christina Amarchey, Brong Ahafo Regional Programme Manager of ActionAid, said the donation followed an assessment by the organisation during visits to the camp and Ampain in the Western Region in April 2011, to determine the state and living conditions of the refugees.

She said plans were afoot to invite a clinical specialist to help psyche the refugees into normal life due to the emotional and psychological trauma the war took them through.

Nana Osei Aseidu, deputy regional coordinator of the National Disaster and Management Organization (NADMO), in charge of operation and manager of the camp, who received the items on behalf of the refugees, expressed appreciation and appealed to other benevolent organizations to emulate good deed.

He said the major problem the refugees faced was the fact that they were not conversant with Ghanaian foods, “but that is what they have to make do with”.

The camp manager however noted that the refugees were not happy because relief items they had received at the camp did not include meat.

He said the camp normally received rice, maize, salt, soaps and saucepan.

Currently, 716 refugees reside at the camp but the number keeps on increasing daily, Mr Asiedu said, and gave the hint that the refugees would soon be moved to a new camp site at Fetenta, near Berekum.
