Abia gets new Speaker as Assembly is inaugurated

    Mr Udo Okochukwu, an accountant, has emerged the new Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly. The election of Okochukwu, representing Ohafia North State Constituency, was unanimous following the inauguration of the Assembly.

    M. Alwell Asiforo Okere, representing Ukwa East was re-elected the Deputy Speaker, while Chief Chidiebere Nwoke, representing Umuahia East state constituency, was elected the Leader of the House.

    Chief P. C. Onyegu, representing Bende South was elected Deputy Leader. Okochukwu is a third time legislator, who first won election into the House in 2002.

    He expressed joy for his election and promised to unite the House to further develop Abia. He urged members of the new House to set ahead of them lofty goals, which must be achieved in order to move the state forward.

    He said the House would be transparent and thorough in handling issues and would legislate for the good of the state. Okochukwu is the sixth Speaker of the Abia House of Assembly and the second from Nkporo after Arua Arunsi, who is now a member of the House of Representatives.

    Other principal officers announced by the Speaker were Dr Ikechukwu Nwabeke as the Whip of the House while Mr. Humphrey Azubuike was appointed the Deputy Whip. The 24-member House is made up of only PDP members. (NAN)
