Maputo — Mozambican President Armando Guebuza has urged Mozambicans to protect and care for the country’s plant life, in order to contribute to reforestation, conserve biodiversity, and ensure continued production of fruit and of wood fuel.
In a message to mark World Environment Day, celebrated on 5 June, Guebuza said the theme chosen by Mozambique “stresses the forests as a centre of our life and in the agenda for the struggle against poverty”. These were themes he wanted to see “reverberate in each and every one of our fellow countrymen”.
He warned that climate change is a reality in Mozambique, and urged Mozambicans to take every opportunity to plant more trees, in order to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Guebuza called for the rational and sustainable use of the country’s natural resources, in order to ensure that they could generate prosperity in the present and the future. Mozambicans, he warned, should bear in mind that the country’s resources are not inexhaustible.
Guebuza issued this message from Chiure in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, where he has begun another stage in his “open and inclusive Presidency”.
