Lugogo — National runner Annet Negesa has extra motivation to excel at the forthcoming World Athletics Championships and All-Africa Games after she was named utl-Uspa sports personality for the month of May. The 19-year-old beat boxer Sharif Bogere and Ecobank Super League champions URA to the accolade given out by sports journalists under their umbrella body, Uspa.
She collected 665 votes while Bogere received 605 and URA 435 as Uspa went to polls at their monthly assembly at Lugogo yesterday. “Oh, that’s nice,” Negesa said on phone after Daily Monitor told her about the accolade. “It’s fantastic to get recognised. It motivates me to keep achieving ahead of the two big events.”
Negesa won two gold medals (800m and 1500m) at the Africa Junior Championships held last month in Gaborone, Botswana. She has already qualified for the All-Africa Games due September 3-11 in Maputo and World Championships slated for August 24-September 4 in Daegu and is determined to shine.
Meanwhile, Mildred Gamba dominated sprint races at the Akii-Bua Memorial Championship held Sunday at Namboole. Gamba won the 100m and 200m races during the event organised in honour of Uganda’s only Olympic gold medallist John Akii-Bua. The former hurdler won gold in Munich 1972. He died in 1997.
