The National Association of Nigeria Students has warned President Goodluck Jonathan against politicising the composition of the Federal Executive Council
A statement by the students’ body on Monday, in Osogbo, Osun State capital, warned that politicisation of ministerial appointments was capable of ruining the Jonathan presidency.
According to the statement, Nigeria will profit from the appointment of seasoned technocrats as ministers and members of the federal cabinet, rather than appointing incompetent members of the ruling party for political gains.
The statement said, “The task of governance would be made easy if round pegs are put in round holes. This is why NANS joins millions of Nigerians to plead with President Jonathan to base his appointment solely on competence.
“Nigeria deserves development and President Jonathan can make this happen by the composition of his cabinet. We enjoin him to shun sentiments and bias in his choice. Nigeria deserves the best hands.
“President Jonathan should write his name in gold by selecting the best brains for the onerous task of nation building lying ahead. The sincerity of his administration would be measured by the composition of his cabinet.”
The students said it was high time Nigeria shunned ethnicity and religious sentiments in political appointments, stressing that integrity, competence and commitment should be the criteria for political appointments.
