President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Thursday called upon all Liberians, irrespective of political affiliation, religion and gender, to rally around the Lone Star Football Team when it goes against Cape Verde on Sunday, June 5, in a qualifying match of the African Cup of Nations Tournament, taking place at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex, in Paynesville.

The President was informed that, due to the importance of the game, the Liberia Football Association (LFA) has recalled a select number of former Lone Star players from the famous “George Weah Eleven” to add experience and beef up the National Team. “I commend the LFA for this decision and hope that those being recalled will perform to the expectation of the Liberian people and, ultimately, bring victory on Sunday,” the President stated, according to an Executive Mansion press release.

The Liberian leader was quoted as saying: “To the players, namely Joe ‘Armstrong’ Nagbe, Kelvin Sebwe, Louis Creighton, and George Geebro, I commend you for coming out of retirement and making the sacrifice to play once more for our National Team. I also strongly encourage all Liberians to support the Lone Star, in whatever fashion, to achieve total victory on Sunday.”

President Sirleaf wished all the players God’s blessings in qualifying Liberia in this very important tournament.

She also said she was confident that appropriate security measures would be put in place by Government’s security institutions, in collaboration with UNMIL, to ensure public safety during the match against Cape Verde.
