Tottenham have secured the signature of 40-year-old goalkeeper Brad Friedel on a free transfer, becoming the club’s first signing of the summer transfer window.

Goal.com understands the American has signed a two-year deal at White Hart Lane, having rejected a one-year contract extension at Aston Villa, his former club.

Friedel had also been offered contracts by West Brom and former side Liverpool, where he would also take up a coaching role, but opted against a return to Anfield due to a lack of first-team chances.

The former United States international made 365 appearances for Blackburn Rovers before moving to Villa Park in the summer of 2008, and went on to break the record for number of consecutive games played in the Premier League with 167 in December 2008, since going on to extend his run to 275 matches.

With Heurelho Gomes, who has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane, and Carlo Cudicini also at the club, Redknapp is pleased with his side’s goalkeeping options.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Spurs boss said: “Brad is a top goalkeeper of real quality who has great experience.

“It is good to have three such experienced top goalkeepers at the club in Gomes, Carlo and now Brad and it means we have competition for places particularly with the number of games we will hopefully face next year both domestically and in Europe as well.”
