ABUJA— President Goodluck Jonathan has said the Federal Government would take definite steps to strengthen the nation’s electoral laws to improve and ensure better elections in the future.
The President, who spoke when the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mr. Joseph Daudu, led members of his executive on a visit to him in Aso Rock, yesterday, said, “we must take steps to strengthen our constitution and the electoral laws within the next one year, so that we can have even better elections than these which have been praised worldwide.”
The President also spoke on the need to maintain credibility of the judiciary which is the arbiter in all cases, and thanked the association for its role in this regard.
He then invited the NBA president to become an honorary adviser, offering suggestions and advice as may be necessary, to strengthen the country’s legal framework, and help ensure smooth dispensation of justice from the judiciary
Responding, Daudu commended Jonathan for obeying court orders. “This government obeys court orders and this growing pattern of compliance is a big plus for you”, adding that the media may not have celebrated this positive trend, but this had been recognised by the legal practitioners.
Daudu, noted that more work needs to be done to ensure that Nigeria’s criminal justice system produces compliance with the laws of the land, so that a solid foundation could be laid for the future.
He expressed appreciation to President Jonathan for offering the position of Honourary Adviser to the leader of the NBA, and assured that he would offer honest, unbiased and trustworthy advice to President.
