MAINLAND Premier League giants, Simba and Yanga, are expected to clash in the next season’s curtain raiser dubbed ‘Charity Shield match’ in Dar es Salaam on August 13.
The encounter will signal the official opening of the new season and yet another battle for more silverware.
Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) Information Officer, Boniface Wambura, said
the Charity Shield match pits the previous season’s champions against the runners-up in accordance with the federation’s procedures for the opening of a new premier league season.
Yanga were crowned champions of this year’s premier league after edging their rivals by goal difference in the very last match to successfully dethrone the Msimbazi Street side, which was closing in on a back to back triumph.
Wambura said the premier league will officially kick off on August 20. Simba will particularly be keen on winning the match so that they could somehow console themselves following the
failure to defend the trophy despite enjoying the driver’s seat for long spells.
Yanga commanded a dramatic 3-0 triumph over Toto Africans in their last match played at the CCM-Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza, while Simba, who needed a win of more than four clear goals against Maji Maji at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, could only grab a 4-1 win.
Victory for Yanga in the coming Charity Shield match will see the Jangwani Street side maintain its winning ways over their rivals in the game as they also won the last season’s curtain raiser on post-match penalties.
