U-20 starlet Modou Kabba Cham is eying big for next season as he looks to break into the Mechelen first-team starting line-up.

The youngster now 18, notched ten goals for Belgium first division Mechelen’s U-19s in a single season. His exploits earned him a call-up with the Gambia national U-20 side where he debuted in the Caf U-17 championship as Gambia finished miserably in the group.

Kabba born to a Belgian mother and a Gambian father has his sight fixed on making an appearance for the A-team. He is one of the sparkling youngsters for Ibou Sawaneh’s former club Mechelen.

“This season I hope to train regularly with the senior team and perhaps make my debut, [even] if [is] only for a few minutes. It seems very good to make my debut for the home fans .The atmosphere behind the barracks will give me an extra boost. I’ll do my duty as a deep striker in a4-4-2 [set up], but can also manage well in a 4-3-3 system. Even though I scored ten goals last season, I must utilize better scoring opportunities [next season]”

The African competition staged in South Africa who won the right to host the event after unceasing political turbulence in Libya, was the promising youngster’s first African international outing but an injury limited him to a single appearance against Nigeria.

While eying for a major boost at club level, Kabba cannot still let the African experience slip away, and here he makes a flashback.

“When I arrived in Gambia I played a test match. I was tired from the trip but could still persuade the Coach,” he said

A day he had his documents processed to be eligible for the tournament, Cham said: “Because I came from Europe, I was welcomed as the great saviour. But with an ankle injury, I only play the final game against Nigeria. Yet it was an important experience for my career”.
