Harvard University on Thursday, May 26, conferred an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree on President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. During a ceremony marking its 360th Commencement, Harvard lavished praises and esteems on the Liberian President as her Alma Mater welcomed her back, describing the President as a woman with uncommon valor.

The President, an Executive Mansion dispatch from Cambridge reports, was also described as a woman with an indomitable spirit whose story is inspirational.

More than 7,200 degrees and certificates were awarded to Harvard College seniors and graduate students.

Honorary degrees were awarded to luminaries in various fields. Also receiving honorary Doctor of Laws degrees were: U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; James R. Houghton, Fellow of the Harvard Corporation; and historian John Pocock. Honorands receiving Doctor of Science degrees were: Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, Director of the World Wide Web Consortium; American Chemist and Nobel Laureate Dudley Herschbach; and former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher. Legendary Spanish tenor, Plácido Domingo, received an honorary Doctor of Music degree; and historian, art critic and theorist Rosalind Krauss, a Doctor of Arts.
