Lagos — The country’s contingent to the 30th African Wrestling Championships, comprising four males, four females and four officials began to vying for honours on Friday in Dakar, Senegal.
The contingent left the country aboard an Air Nigeria aircraft on Thursday.
Segun Akinlotan, Secretary Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), said on Friday in Lagos that they would feature in female wrestling, free style and Greco-Roman for men.
Akinlotan said that 21 wrestlers were earlier selected to participate in the championships but that because of financial constraints the number was reduced to eight.
He said the wrestlers were selected from a National Open Competition, held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan from May 1 to May 5.
The female wrestlers are Sammy Oziti (48kg), Blessing Oborodudu (63kg), Ifeoma Iheanacho (67kg) and Amarachi Obiajulu (72kg).
The males are Amas Daniel (60kg), Adibo Dick (84kg), Simirie Boltic (96kg) for free style and Joe Agbonavare (84kg) who would feature in the Greco- Roman style.
Akinlotan recalled that Nigeria won the 2010 edition in Egypt with four gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals from the three events. (NAN)
