Knocking Liverpool off their perch to win a 19th top flight title was one thing, but challenging the might of Barcelona, one of the best sides in history, is an entirely different proposition. Ferguson, at 69, still seemed to have as much drive as ever after Saturday night's 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League final at Wembley.

Michael Owen says he remains hopeful of staying at Manchester United as speculation mounts over his future.

Owen was an unused substitute for United in Saturday’s Champions League final defeat to Barcelona at Wembley and his contract at Old Trafford expires this summer, with no indication having been given yet as to whether it will be renewed.

But despite a lack of first team opportunities this term, Owen insists he has enjoyed his time with United and hopes to extend his stay at the club.

“I have loved every minute,” he told Sky Sports. “We have great players, great staff, great manager and great fans. Hopefully it can continue.”

Owen also believes Saturday’s defeat at Wembley should not take the shine off another successful season for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side which yielded the club’s record 19th league title.

“When you start every season the first objective is to win the league,” he added.

“What happened at the weekend should not be allowed to detract from that.”
