Kenyan Athletes endured a torrid evening at the IAAF Diamond league meeting in Rome on Thursday night. Reigning Africa and Commonwealth games 3,000m champion Milcah Chemos salvaged pride for the Kenya team, winning her speciality and picking up four points.

Chemos added to her Doha points tally with another 3,000m steeplechase win. She lowered her world leading time for the year to 9:12.89, while behind her Sofia Assefa set an Ethiopian record of 9:15.04 with Tunisia’s Habiba Ghribi third in a season best 9:20.33.

After following pacemaker and fellow Kenyan Lydiah Chepkurui through the first kilometre in 3:01.47, Chemos took over the lead when her compatriot dropped out with three and a half laps to go. Chemos then sped away in the final metres to register the win.

Olympic 1,500m champion Asbel Kiprop found the 800m going tough. He came came fourth in1:46:02 with Commonwealth Games champion Boaz Lalang fifth in 1:46.10. David Mutinda was sixth in 1:46:64. Commonwealth bronze medallist Richard Kiplagat was seventh in 1:46.88. Former world champion Alfred Kirwa was eighth in 1:48:73.

Reigning Olympic champion Nancy Lagat lost to Ethiopian-born Bahraini Maryam Yusuf Jamal in the four lap race. Jamal won for the second successive year in Rome with the timer stopping at 4:01.60.

Ethiopian duo, Meskerem Assefa (4:02.12) and Africa silver winner, Gelete Burka (4:03.28) sealed the top three with Ukraine’s Anna Mishchenko (4:03.53) ending fourth.

Lagat, the Diamond League winner was fifth (4:03.66) with Irene Jelagat (4:04.79) and Olympics and world 800m silver winner, Janeth Jepkosgei (4:04.87) placed seventh and eighth.

In the mens 5,000m Isiah Kiplangat Koech fought hard in the race but lost eventually to Ethiopia’s Imane Merga. Merga clocked 12:54.21 with Koech coming home second in 12:54.59. Vincent Chepkok came home third registering 12:54.59. Mark Kiptoo came home sixth posting 12:59.91 with Lucas Kimelu seventh in 13:00.02 and Thomas Longosiwa ninth in 13:06.62.
