THIS weekend the Windhoek Country Club will host a fierce battle when the top female golfers in Namibia compete to lift the Bank Windhoek Namibian Open Ladies Amateur Golfer trophy.
Thirty-six golfers from across the country have entered for the 24th edition of the championship. As more and more women golfers joined the “men’s golfing world” Bank Windhoek opted to sponsor this prestigious event for both men and ladies separately.
“The Bank Windhoek Namibia Ladies Open Championship has grown in the past years to be the highlight of the Ladies Golfing Calendar,” said Heidi van Niekerk, President of Namibia Amateur Ladies Golf Union.
“We have in the past managed to attract golfers not only from Namibia, but ladies from Botswana and the RSA have entered this tournament.
“We have invited our counterparts in SA and other African countries again, but sad to say that with the current economic climate it is understandable that traveling this far for a tournament is expensive and not always feasible.”
The format of this championship is stroke play, as players earn points for the annual merit list, which is used for team selections for national participation in tournaments like the Regional All Africa Championship, which this year will be held in Zimbabwe.
In addition Van Niekerk said that for this year, the organisers have decided to add a category for participants who do not feel that they are up to the “fierce” competition against the likes of last year’s champion Bonita Bredenhann, who is a fine young prospect.
“They will be allowed to play a Stableford competition, giving them a chance to perform and compete on their own level and still be part of this tournament and most of all enjoy the game,” she said.
