12 May 2011 Sumbe — At least 34 new cases of leprosy were recorded since January so far in coastal Kwanza Sul province, said Wednesday a local health source. Speaking to the press, the provincial supervisor of Programme of combat Leprosy, Antero Carlitos Paulo said that the figure adds to 162 previous cases of people who are receiving medical treatment. According to him, the new cases were reported in the districts of Sumbe, Cela, Kibala and Seles.

Luq — Bitter clashes broke out between Somali army and Al Shabaab fighters in Luq town in Gedo region in southern Somalia, reports said on Saturday.

Fighters loyal to Somalia’s Al Shabaab, which controls large portions in southern and central Somalia, have launched premeditated attacks on government positions in the town.

Reports emanating from the region suggested that the two warring factions have pounded each others heavy and light weapons.

Residents said the echoes of artillery bombardments and heavy gunfire could be heard throughout the town of Luq.

At least one person has been confirmed dead and two others injured in the combat. All victims were the combatants from both sides.

Diyad Abdi Kalil, Somali military officer in the region, told Shabelle that the fighting was very slight and has no scale.

No immediate responses were available from Al Shabaab movement.
