Chelsea defender Ashley Cole believes that he is regaining fans’ confidence after they elected him England’s Player of the Year.
The 30-year-old has replaced Kenny Samson as England’s most capped left-back tallying an 88th appearance in the Three Lions’ match against Wales in March after winning the fans’ award in February.
Cole’s remarkable international career has been overshadowed somewhat by criticism from supporters about his performances as well as controversy affecting his private life.
Indeed, the defender admits he was surprised at winning an award not voted for by his peers but by fans.
He told Sky Sports: “It feels amazing. It came as a big surprise,”
“I never thought I would win it. I just want to carry on getting caps and to play well for my country.
“It’s hard because every player makes a mistake on the pitch but I don’t think it’s always about that.
“It’s been more personal, so that has hurt me even more.
“But every time I put on an England shirt I try my hardest. I want to win. I think in voting me Player of the Year the fans are starting to see that.”
