Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists that there would be “no logic” behind potentially picking Jack Wilshere and leaving out Liverpool‘s Andy Carroll from the England Under-21 squad.
The midfielder has been widely expected to be named in the squad, while the young forward’s injury problems could see him being rested.
But the Frenchman remains adamant that fatigue cannot be the grounds on which the tall hitman stays behind, as Wilshere has played 49 games at club level as opposed to Carroll’s 29 this season.
“It’s quite surprising,” Wenger said, according to The Independent.
“If you look at the number of games Carroll played and Wilshere played, I could understand that Carroll doesn’t go for some injury problems. For fatigue problems, it will be more difficult to convince people in England that he is more tired than Jack Wilshere.”
Both Carroll and Wilshere are in the provisional 40-man squad, and the former Monaco boss expects both players to be among the final 23 names for the European Championship.
“He will be concerned, U-21 boss Stuart Pearce, to leave Carroll behind,” said Wenger.
“I don’t think he will do it because he knows that’s opening the door for many other complaints behind that. Because the players as well they react like that: ‘If he doesn’t go, why do I go?’ So I think that could be a dangerous game to leave Carroll behind, because it could create many other problems.”
