Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is remaining hopeful of keeping the Gunners’ title chances alive, but knows that the north London side need their rivals to slip up.
A 1-0 victory against Manchester United last Sunday kept Wenger’s men in with a shout of winning the Premier League and the Frenchman knows that his side need to keep the momentum from that game going, but realises the dream is fading fast.
“There is very little chance the title will happen,” Wenger told reporters.
“We need Chelsea to win and after that the two teams still to drop points in one game and so we need exceptional positive circumstances, which was not the case until now this year.”
The former Monaco boss wants no regrets after the season has finished and refuses to think he will look back at games the Gunners could have won to claim the title, such as this weekend’s tie with Stoke City.
“I do not want to come out of the season and to think if we had won at Stoke, then also our last two games, we would have made it,” he said.
“I don’t leave in a dreamland, I live in a realistic world, in a competitive world and real competitors fight until the end.”
Away from the pitch, the 61-year-old knows he will be required to discuss the futures of players that have not featured regularly in his squad this season, such as striker Nicklas Bendtner.
“I will sit down with Nicklas at the end of the season to see how he feels,” Wenger said.
“I completely agree that he did not get enough chances, it was a very difficult season for him. He must be frustrated and I am as well because I feel he was not involved enough.
“That is part of the competition as well, but we will see where we go from here at the end of the season. I hope he will stay.”
