Nasara Rejects Konadu

The Muslim youth wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nasara Club, has distanced itself from claims by a youth group of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern regional capital, Tamale, describing itself as ‘Nasara Youth in Tamale’, that it supports the candidacy of former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

A few days ago, ahead of Mills’ visit to Tamale, the NDC youth group issued a statement in which they endorsed the candidature of Mrs Rawlings, outlining their belief in her ability to help find the killers of the late Ya Na Yakubu Andani.

They however expressed grave disappointment and loss of confidence in incumbent President Mills who is seeking re-election and subsequently asked him not to embark on the visit to the region because they claimed he would not be welcomed.

Some NDC chieftains are already linking the NPP to the statement from the NDC youth. But the NPP, which is the only political party in the country that currently uses the name Nasara, has denied doing any such thing.

In a statement captioned ‘We Have No Hand In NDC Internal Politics’, National Coordinator of the Nasara Club, Abubakari Sulemana said, “The Nasara wing of the NPP has no links or association with the youth group and does not have a view, neither do we have an interest as to who leads the NDC post Congress.” The Nasara wing of the NPP emphasized, “We therefore do not take lightly the association of the said youth group to us by some unscrupulous elements in the NDC.”

Apart from that that, it stated, “We do not know this group, we do not have anything whatsoever to do with the said youth group”, admonishing, “We urge those who want to malign our wing in their public discourse towards their own selfish gain to desist from doing so henceforth”.

It stated, “The NPP will crush the NDC at the polls in 2012 due to their abysmal and incompetent performance, the lies and propaganda, and the hardships that they have unleashed on the Ghanaian populace.”

Whilst it believes in and is committed to finding the killers of the Ya Na, the Nasara wing of the NPP added, “But we do not share the view that it is up to Nana Konadu nor the NDC alone to do so” since “the views expressed by the group do not in any way represent what we stand for.”

That notwithstanding, the group said, “We stand for the development and empowerment of the people in the Zongo communities of our country”, stating emphatically that “our disgust at the machinations and utterances of certain elements within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who have tried to rope in the Nasara Wing of the NPP as collaborators in the chaos that has engulfed the NDC.”
