Ivorian refugees continue to flee into Ghana weeks after the arrest of former Ivorian leader Laurent Gbagbo and the halting of armed hostilities between Gbagbo and Ouatarra factions, authorities in the Western Region have told Citi News.

The refugees, most likely Gbagbo’s supporters, claim they are being persecuted by loyalists of UN recognised President Alassane Ouattara and had to flee to save their lives.

Kelly Forson, Manager of the Ampain Refugee Camp in the Western region told Citi News about 90 people crossed the border into Ghana and were admitted to the camp on Wednesday April 27. Mr Forson explained that it was not unusual to have people fleeing their homes and lands after major conflicts. “Such situations are never over. There is something called flash back and that one is even more dangerous than the main conflict.

“It’s a situation where people would be persecuting others, chasing people who are known activists in the opposing side and I can tell you for a fact that those who are coming out now are more of Gbagbo people. “There are other ones too who are living in the vicinity where for fear of their lives would want to flee so that’s how come people are fleeing. The conflict might be over but the flash backs are even dangerous”.

According to him, “it’s an ongoing development as and when we have space, we’ll put up more of the tents to accommodate them”. Mr Forson added that the refugees have not yet been visited by any official from their country’s government. According to him, the inmates of the camp are comporting themselves well.
