Abuja — The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has slammed a N500m fine on Zamfara State radio for broadcasting an unauthorised governorship results in Gusau, the state capital on Wednesday.

In a statement signed by the head of its public affairs, Mallam Awwalu Salihu, the NBC said that only the Independent National Electoral Commission’s returning officer for any election had the authority to announce results.

“Speculating on candidates who are leading from collated results is prohibited by the NBC code”, he said.

Calling for strict adherence to the broadcasting code, the commission appreciated the efforts of broadcasting stations for their in-depth coverage of the general elections.

According to the statement, eight broadcasters were sanctioned by the commission for breaking the law prohibiting the airing of political broadcasts within 24 hours to polling day, in the run-up to the rescheduled National Assembly elections held Saturday April 9, 2011.
